This project is a site-specific installation set up in a derelict brewery in a small town in Germany named Biedenkopf.
In this project I worked with one of the remnant holes found in the brewery that used to hold the gigantic brewing containers. The installation consists of attaching over hundred of spinned hair threads around the hole, connecting the upper and lower holes in the building.
The initial inspiration came from my personal encounter with a massively intricate spider web found in a corner of the building which aspired me to work with an organic matter that is sustainable as my artistic material. It has also elicited the analogical interpretation of a spider web and its metaphoric presence indicating human’s neglect or non-existent of human presence in a place. This contradiction intrigued me in light of the correlation between the presence of human and other living things in a public space.
By setting up a distinctive web in this unique space, I sought to create a landscape that resonates, evoking presence both spatially and mentally. Also I had employed a disappearing old craft in hope to bring poeple and their memories together through the act of learning and sharing this precious cultural asset. There was participation from the city’s residents throughout this project. By setting up a working space with a visible location near the main market square, I came into contacts with many locals. I also worked with a couple of local experts on spinning whom I had worked closely with.
The installation could be seen from outside the building through the massive glass windows the whole day, with the installed programmed lights switched on every night. An opening in the brewery took place as the final presentation, along with the polaroid photographs.

Through this installation, this historically- notable building will once again finds its place in the local’s memories.
