Installation, Fantasy / Visionary, Various materials
I like to get inspired by the surroundings of a specific exhibition place. Like the Fortress Island Pampus in Muiden (near Amsterdam). This fortress was build for protection of Amsterdam in times of war. The ridiculous fact that it was build for war, but never ever used for this purpose, made me think of the men who were garrisoned on the island when the fortress was finished. They never fought there, and must have been bored out of their mind. I wondered what they might have said to each other, and placed short phrases on the wall of an "escarp" corridor. The phrases all start with the letter F, a slight reference to Fortress Island Pampus. They are paired with red strobelights, and the sound of a bombardment. What would have happended if the men there had to fight? "What Shall We Do" refers to the boredom, but also to the panic in case of war.
