OPS! OPERA PER I 150 ANNI DELL'UNITA' D'ITALIA

The French flag replaces the Italian flag in a work whose aim is to celebrate Italy’s 150th anniversary? OOPS! Apologies for the slip. Green replaced by blue… was the artist just inattentive? Then, surprised at his own failure to act, would the artist have made his apologies? Actually, this is not but a slip in the producing of the work: by ironically and irreverently dealing with the rhetoric of Italy’s unity, the artist is probably trying to communicate that a work of art (not only the one with which we are dealing) is but a slip, and such a paradoxical one as it is presumably a sort of voluntary inattention, an intentional slip. In the artistic process, intentionality and non-intentionality are interdependent. The artist is aware of this and conceives of his work as a particular form of ascesis, by virtue of which he wants not to want the work. So, art can be a slip which no everyday psychopathology can explain. An implacable casualness able to fill our lives with sense by means of its own lack of sense.
