“Toward the Same Aspirations” is part of the series of “Form of Unity / Land of Ease.” “Ease" (yi-a Chinese character) here has double significations. First is simplicity – with houses built in the mountain, it is a life beyond the secular world, a life of reclusion and purity. Nonetheless, a mountainous life, though simple, is also full of changes – multifarious changes of the clouds between dawn and dusk. And this is the second implication of “ease” – change or dynamics. The “Land of Ease” cleverly captures both significations in one painting. Several houses are built together, meaning a group of people upholding the same aspirations: simplicity of life and purity of mind – an ideal transcendental state of being for those appreciating an Arcadia lifeworld.
