The Victorian bushfires in February 2009 ranked among the top 10 wildfires/bushfires in the world with respect to fatalities and damage to the environment. The scale of the fires—attributed to extreme weather conditions coupled with a severe and protracted drought that had created tinder-dry vegetation across the state—was unprecedented and left the country in a state of shock.
