Flight to Egypt

Flight to Egypt

Flight to Egypt”, with its blue-gray colours and matt, slightly rough texture, reminds us simultaneously of the famous frescos by Giotto in Padua and the smoke of the Symbolists’ paintings (Deni, Borisov-Musatov). In this case, the composition is built on the principles that would gain the approval of the Quattrocento masters: the action of the picture is happening in the foreground from left to right and parallel to the painting’s plain, with a rigorous, nearly Sinai landscape. The colours chosen support the harmony of the linear composition with the classic technique of positioning warm and cold: warm red of the road under the characters’ feet supports the foreground; grey-blue silvery reflexes on the landscape hills in the background make the depth of space.
