In the series Dokufitcion – When Germans Are Having Fun I aim to sharpen our perception of historical visual material through personal intervention. The means are sometimes brutal, sometimes ridiculous or subtle – but always visible to the sharp eye.
I mount myself in the historical photographs in various disguises staging different people representing different positions. The situations thus created give the images a new perspective. By help of these “enhanced” pictures we indulge more intensely in what we see and question our unreflected approach to documents. Scenes from German history in the 20th century are particularly apt to this kind of artistic research.
