Sacred space illuminated by the perfect insect

Sacred space illuminated by the perfect insect

The interface between Nature and the Sacred becomes ever more poignant as the world realises the desecration and reduction of biodiversity. This project consists of drawings made by using thousands of similar strokes with a fine white inked pen. These marks become more concentrated towards the centre of the paper. Having been created through intuition, the work suggests energy or ‘essence’, the source of which is for the viewer to decide. It was inspired by the synchronous flashing of a group of fireflies seen in South East Sri Lanka in November 2003.

Working at a critical time we, as artists, operate within a society which has awarded us high ‘taboo free’ status with cathedral-like places in which to create our alchemy – giving us an impermeable moral and ethical liberty to visit and comment on any issues – with all the work sheltered under ‘Art’s’ precarious protection. Art is called to question but not obliged to answer – how convenient!
