PAL

PAL

The work "PAL" consists of two overlapping photographs.
One photo shows a group of Africans tightly crowded together in an incredibly small dinghy floating on the open sea, the second is a sunny holiday picture of the sea.
Unlike the holiday photo, the boat picture shows the typical characteristics of a low-resolution JPG image, originally optimized for the Internet.

The tension between the quality these two different resolutions derives the possibility to reflect a "direct and indirect experience".
So it is "making visible" and "concealing" or "making visible by concealing."
It's about the displacement of unpleasant realities. It's about ignorance.

Wkipedia entry to "PAL":
A PAL-panel is based on the 'innate propensity of the people', how they decide to interpret something, such as not to see what they do not want to see, did not expect or can't explain.
They declare it simply as a problem of other people and therefore simply take it as not true. The PAL-panel is mentioned in the book "Life, the universe and everything" by Douglas Adams.
