Installazione - Colonia Piazza n. 9
DESCRIPTION. This installation consists of 1 collage of 6 digital photographs (size: 150x150 cm) printed on Dibond, covered in Plexiglas and mounted on a wall, and 2 handmade tablets assembled and set in front of the collage. The tablet set horizontally on the floor bears a photograph printed on Dibond with a Plexiglas cover, whereas the one set vertically bears a photograph printed on a transparent 1 cm-thick Plexiglas surface.
CONCEPT. This installation is meant to convey the ambiguous and artificial nature of the distinction between real and non-real. This is an eternal human issue, which has indeed become hugely serious in contemporary mass-media society, with all its consequences in terms of social inclusion/exclusion and cohesion. In the wall-mounted collage, ambiguity lies in the way in which the 6 photograms have been combined. At first sight, the subject seems to be a square filled with passers-by whose shadows are reflected into the ground. As a matter of fact, some shadows are erect like real people, whereas some real people lie down like shadows. Contrast and dialogue take place between real people and shadows, which exchange their respective roles. The only difference between them is the colour of the real people’s dresses, which contrasts with the obvious grey tone of the shadows. A role play also takes place between the two tablets set in front of the collage, becoming part of the physical three-dimensional space. The transparent vertical tablet displays a pair of shadows in erect position, whereas the horizontal tablet displays a pair of real people lying down on the floor, serving as the shadow of the former pair.
