Black Flag Revival
The work of Ryts Monet is centred on the ability of music to speak about social issues within the context of economic and cultural crisis that affects the Northeast Italy today and in particular the region of Veneto, where the highest rate of suicides among the businessmen is registered. The feeling of protest and anger expressed by the music of the Black Flag, Californian hardcore-punk band of the 80s, is actualized by the artist who has founded a cover band with three musicians from the area of Veneto, asking them to re-interpret their music and recording their performance in a vinyl and a video. Just like the drawings on the Black Flag’s album covers visually represented the content of their songs, Ryts Monet has realized the album cover with a photographic work, creating an iconography of the issue of the entrepreneur suicides, by portraying the facades of their abandoned houses. The series of shots is also displayed in a series of analogical slides, projected in loop beside an Italian flag deprived of its colors while on the other side of the room a TV screen reproduces the video documentation of the cover band’s performance.
