The hidden path that twists between the buildings, the not knowing what is around the next corner, contrasts with the sense of openness of the sky. Solidity and airiness. Closed and guarded to contrast with freedom and lightness. The palette is almost monochromatic in this painting, the high contrast of the whites of the buildings and dark blue/greys of their shadows creates drama and the closer tones of the sky a sense of peace.
