Original Sin

Statement
“ORIGINAL SIN”, 2010.
Video, 9’36’’

„Original Sin" is essentially a classic, Biblical story of the sin, punishment, redemption and penitence; of the right the woman has won to "eat" from the tree of cognition, to separate the good from the evil all by herself. On the other hand, this is the story of the women from the recent conservative "Eastern Block" who are beginning to meddle increasingly deeper and more largely in affairs that just a little while ago were reserved only for Gods-men.

In this video piece, a woman interviewed by a journalist gradually builds up a picture about the position of art and artists in the post-war, transitional and globalisation times through her personal confession. Until just before the very end, the voice of the interviewee is disguised as well as her face that is concealed in contra light/as a silhouette.

The irony of the overall situation here is emphasised by the fact that the interviewed woman talks about art, the position of artists and the attitude of society towards the arts, while the audience follows all this with a conviction of it being a confession of a prostitute.

Only in the last scene, there comes a sudden twist that makes the observer feel partly guilty and ashamed for not having recognised this condition, which he/she could have influenced and changed somehow.

The entire scene refers to a common stereotype taken from the news programms, which we come across on a nearly everyday basis. We are, almost daily, witnessing various court trials dealing with abuse (mostly women and children) or brutal war and civilian crimes, during which the victims hide from the perpetrators, protecting their identity.
