Painting, Memory, Landscape, Oil, 76.2x60.9cm
Inspired by my mother’s old family photographs, my art involves painting over a worked, wooden surface, and requires taking away paint from the underlying layer in order to reveal the initial ground as much as it requires applying paint. In the way that the figures blend into shadows and the foundation of the works unveils itself, this contradictory approach to creation mirrors the conflicted nature of representing personal memories to a wider audience. While the monochromatic palette carries a certain melancholy, the technique embraces accidents and allows for a dark but nostalgic atmosphere. In this way, the work is about both the imperfect process of painting itself, the textures and colors that comprise it, and also the imperfect nature of memories and the shadows that populate them after the passage of time.
