The reasons for increasing incidence of domoic acid include global climate change, eutrophication from fertilizers, agricultural and urban runoff, aquaculture activity, coastal development and pollution. Domoic Acid Algal Blooms can occur in marine, estuarine, and fresh waters, but the blooms of greatest concern are the ones that occur in fresh water, such as drinking water reservoirs or recreational waters. Contamination can occur in birds, marine life, and humans. Cooking the contaminted food source will not neutralize the bacteria/poison.
