Sail

Sail

Site-specific installation
installation view (Galleria Upp, Giudecca Island, Venezia)
thermal blankets assembled, various materials
variable dimensions
2012

The work consists in a sail realized with thermal blankets and installed at the entrance of Galleria Upp (Venice) in front of the basin of San Marco.
Its motion and music have been recorded in a video from sunrise to sunset and featured in a video installation. Afterwards the sail has been folded in the shape of a cube.

“The gold and silver paper within which catastrophe survivors are wrapped in order to recover warmth acts both as sails and wings, man-made and natural instruments to master the water and air elements. Monet says that the sail outstretched represents his potency (‘potenza’) compressed, his castration. Midway between Ulysses and Icarus, the artist is looking for his lost powers, like a god-like figure".

Claire Tancons (excerpt from the catalogue, Sail, Galleria Upp, 2012).
