The shadow in this image is protective. The viewer is drawn to look into the distance whilst the fading light spots the sky with a range of pastel shades. In the foreground the light picks out the colour of the stone and the arches glow with a golden ochre colour. Despite the contrast of shadow and light the painting creates a sense of peace.
