Gettysburg: La Stalla con il Foro di Proiettile

This painting is a remake of a pastel drawing I did while visiting Gettysburg many years ago. It features the now-famous barn which was damaged by a cannonball during battle. The barn, which was owned at the time by the Trostle family, is often referred to as "the barn with the bullet hole."

This painting differs from my recent landscapes in that it is painted in a direct alla prima style, using a limited earth palette. This seemed appropriate, in contrast to my more recent brightly colored, imaginative landscapes, because of the serious undertone of the subject. Indeed the battle at Gettysburg was the most bloody battle fought during the American Civil War.
