Friends

Painting, Political / Social, Portrait, Oil, 366x274x1cm
I began this piece by logging on to my friends Face book account. Then i began thinking about American and world culture. More importantly, I was looking at the affect that the face book culture had on its participants. In this case I found many disconnections and it depressed me.

my friend only knew(on a personal level) 80 of the 500 "friends" He had on his account.
He told me which ones they were and i painted them in full detail. As he named off more "friends", He realized that he didn't really know them. So I painted those with less detail. Eventually as the portraits moved out, the people just became objects.
They were identified by a movement of my finger digging into the wet paint to form only one characteristic. There souls were shrunk and degraded.
