“Chi esce riesce”- He who leaves succeeds.
Between 1861 and 1971 as many as 6 million Italians emigrated from their homeland to the United States in search of the American dream. Here they worked, prospered and created several generations of so called “Italian Americans”.
This migration still continues today. Due to the economical crisis affecting Italy a new generations of Italian is moving from the home county to the United States.
This phenomenon is driving thousands of young Italian professionals to follow path of their ancestors and to migrate to find a better future.
In the past, leaving the country to the enchanted land of opportunities “Lamerica”, meant leaving behind everything and “untighten the thighs” with the “famiglia”. Today this journey has changed because of the technological improvements that allow easier communications and transport. But the constriction and the urge to find a place with more opportunities remain identical. This project investigates both the Italian Americans and the Italians that live in New York City.
This project pictures the persons now considered Italian Americans, as well as the new comers. Their stories with their similarities and differences will be investigated as well as their opinions and feelings towards Italy and life in the Unites States.
Thu a series of portraits in 35 mm, and interviews, the author intends to document the differences and the similarities of these two generations of Italian migrants living in the United States.
