Mutant

Newman’s “Mutant” is a series of self-portraits as gay comic book characters. In his performance he explores the homophobic and hetero-normative discourse of the genre. He embodies the silly and effeminate, the sinister and perverted and the diseased and contagious. In doing so, he explores not just crude, stereotypical representations of homosexuality but also the norms and values that underpin them.
