My I
Visible White photography competition 2014
The modern interpretation of self-portraiture and its fast spread in digital media, has in most recent cases masked a fake, pretend and shallow representation, while the real self is concealed. This project, My I uses new techniques in photography including multiple exposure, to test the potential of producing a true self-portrait that goes beyond the external skin.
In My I series, the inner self takes a physical life and becomes visible along with the outer self in one image. The combination brings out the different personalities of both, emphasizing on their individuality and entity at once. The series portray the process of the inner self coming out, the blurred and uncertain moments through self actualization and the clear, transparent schizophrenia at hand. That being said the two can only exist simultaneously and not as a singularity, they must support one another and feed from each other’s conflicts even to the extent that they implode becoming a singularity. This Impersonation of the inner self hopes to reflect a true self- understanding, producing a holistic personal identity.
“Both friend and enemy reside within us. One lives by the rule of compassion, the other by the rule of hard knocks. Though potential influence of either extreme is inevitable, our actions bear witness to the one we embrace.”
