Pretty / Ugly

In winter of 2010, young people between the ages of 10 to 14 began asking YouTube if they were attractive. Although one of the initial instigators of the trend claims her video was nothing more than a dare, it is estimated over 1000 youth quickly followed suit. 'Pretty / Ugly' is a collection of 18 of these young women.

'Pretty / Ugly' is part of the larger 'Public Profile Project', an ongoing exploration of female identity and self-exploitation within social media and contemporary society.

Ideally, the 'Pretty / Ugly' installation would be in a dark enclosed room with a large screen projected on one wall. The video would play on a loop with a 5 second break in between. Speakers would be mounted in surround sound, overwhelming the viewer in an experience that is as acoustic as it is visual. The intention is for the viewer to be be caught up the conflicting voices and faces, spending far more time with these videos than they would if merely encountered online.
