The Missing Object. Bricks and Butterflies

Kristien De Neve, Belgian artist living in Rome, presents an installation on the terrace and the facade of the Belgian Academy in Rome to mark the 75th anniversary of the Belgian Cultural Institute in Rome.
She will place on top of the solid, facade of the Belgian Academy, a splendid example of rational architecture, several moving, wavy and wavering structures. In those structures one recognizes the contours of a butterfly, brick walls, a clothes-hanger and an overdimensional chair, which however does not invite to sit down.
In a period of undeniable social crisis the artist Kristien De Neve shows the necessity of a profound change by means of recognizing the temporary nature of our forms of knowledge and an awareness of our profound interdependence.
The central theme of the installation is „the missing object“, which signifies the human tendency to be more attracted by a not yet defined or consumed object rather than one we already know or own. According to the artist it is essential to question one’s own attitude towards the missing object, which is both the flywheel for a precious human quest and the pivot that is being exploited by many on a commercial level, manipulating people’s choices.
The installation is entirely covered by used clothes, given to the artist, and offers a joyful, fragile and temporary vision of life. The hope to contribute to necessary considerations about new ways of life in which each and everyone counts and does not have to renounce from a sense of community and profound unity in all aspects of life.
