In "Black Dog" I am trying to render visible a force that is invisible and draw the viewer into the painting to experience that force. The colour of the ground is sickly and unreal, suggesting that we dealing with a portent of death in the imaginary. Yet the black dog is no dream. Without collar, no owner in sight, he has advanced a few yards and is watching you, breathing your scent, oblivious to the respect owed by dogs to humans founded on generations of loyalty to their masters. Will you stand your ground or run?
