This painting of a back is from a series titled "8 Student Artists" and relate directly to a quote by Albrecht Dürer: "The lie is in our understanding, and darkness is so firmly entrenched in our mind that even our groping will fail." Although the shadows do not quite relate to the pose my student artists are contemplating their own shadows. Perhaps looking for inspiration, a fixed stare full of intent through fruitless searching. They are inactive not because they are too lazy to work but because their energy is paralysed by thought.
