I painted this portrait of John Butler in June of 2008 after photographing him in his home in Fremantle. It was a fantastic experience to meet such a genuine, approachable person, of whom I had long been a fan. My style for this portrait was urban, loose, and modern, which complimented my subject. I wanted to portray three important elements of his character that would resonate with his fans; the musician, the activist, and the regular guy. The composition came to me naturally as did the earthly colour palette. Using mixed media including collage allows for interesting experimentation with colour and texture.
