Untitled 2, 2009
Untitled 2, 2009 was produced in response to personally motivated issues & ideas. These were explored in 3-Dimensions through the appropriation of everyday objects. Items such as: doors, stairs, carpet & clothing are familiar to us all. We often live so closely with these items that we take them for granted and they become naturalised or invisible- some call their meaning 'closed'. But when ripped from their original context of use, deprived of their necessity to serve some useful function, and then altered or simply presented in a different context or relationship to how they usually appear, the appearance of the object(s) can be transformed, suggesting different meanings, functions or values. The objects are no longer what they seem- they are a little strange even, and the viewer is challenged to find a new thought for thase objects.
I use familiar objects to create a link to the 'everyday'. The everyday constitutes what Lefebvre calls 'the common ground' or 'connective tissue' of 'all conceivable human thoughts and activities' and I aim to use that common ground which is familiar to us all to draw in the viewer.
