Sedeo Ergo Sum, I sit therefore I am, is a photographic project that shows a series of empty public spaces. The images, focusing the attention on the distribution of chairs in the space, highlight different types of roles and relationships played in a specific context.

As the critic Alena Alexandrova pointed out, this series constitutes a "Scenography of Social Spaces:
Public spaces, spaces where we walk, view, listen, deliberate, read, wait together are characterised by a particular scenography. Architectural environments envelop our social gestures and behaviours, but the main protagonist of the stage set, its key element, is the chair. Different constellations of chairs provide the infrastructure that literally, physically holds a group of people of together. They are the structure that supports a particular form of sociality. Caterina Pecchioli’s photographs portray the position of viewing, listening or speaking and not the social behaviour or the spectacle itself. The space of the audience is a literal, spatial counter-point to the stage – the place of a fictional world. In this sense the photographs are a counter-image of the shared fiction of theatre or politics. They examine the very position of viewing and the state of being together, which usually remains out of the field of visibility. The photographs of the vacant theatre hall or the parliament do not examine the event on stage, which is the focal point of the social gaze, but the material structure that frames the very act of seeing together. The photographs resonate with our memories; they are both an image of public space and a trace of a social gesture, a stage abandoned by its actors.” From the text “Scenography of Socail Spaces” by Alena Alexandrova:

Fascinated by this ability of the chair, everyday object, to be indicator of relationships and relational roles brought me from 2010 till now to created a body of work on this theme, using different mediums. Apart from the photographic series "Sedeo Ergo Sum" I realized, "Relational Effect" (performance-installation), "Social Choreography" (interactive installation) and "Chair-Fossil" (Sculpture).
