Drowning by time
A journey along the last stretch of the Po river: a homecoming, from Ferrara down to the Delta, where the river joins the Adriatic Sea.
The area along the river is the subject of the story, the place is the main actor and the perception of peculiarities of these environments inspired the movie.
The title, "DROWNING BY TIME" plays with the similarity between "drowning" and "drawing". This pun has as protagonists the territory drawn by the river and its delta, the physical and intellectual drowning of these places.
For this reason the movie has been composed by two parallels video.
In the first one, the story takes place along the banks, to discover nature, the flow of days and seasons, the environmental changing, the infinite calm of the river. There's a temporal dimension in which the flow of water, the lights, the wind, the surrounding environments define a "time of the river", a time of infinity, in which the water becomes an irrevocable figure, a final hourglass. Clean photography and natural images documenting the reality of the places.
In the second one, the main topic is not the river environment, but the life of the little towns, the people, the man and his works, all transfigured and decontextualized in a critical and ironic way with the help of 3D and digital effects. Video analyzes an inhospitable territory. Marshy places at the ends of Po Valley, where people have forgotten their past.
Sound and music work side by side with images, from Mozart to noise, from death metal to italian classic song and pop music, from natural and soft sounds to artificial.
