It was back in March when I began my project to paint a series of works to be given as gifts to the various people for which I felt a deep sense of gratitude. I decided to dedicate the month of March to finishing up this project. But as things often go, there were unforeseen factors in the wings. As the winter ice was thawing, I developed a frozen shoulder. I don't think I can say that I ever appreciated as I do now the wonderful lifetime of service my shoulder has rendered! Fast forward to July, and we are in a heat wave. My shoulder is slowly healing, "thawing," as it is said, and I am finally completing my project. So this is the last in my series of gift paintings, at least for now. It is painted in a direct style, which is not typical of my recent paintings. In painting this still-life, I wanted to add something unexpected. Hence, the butterfly.
