My work is basically composed by two main elements: the ground and the subject.
The ground that I chose, the ancient door, affected me because it is worn and ruined but at the same time it is tough and weatherproof. For this reason it could perfectly symbolize both the moral values that my family taught me and my life experience, and the tradition of my land of origin, the Sicily.
I decided to represent myself as the subject to symbolize my inner part, my unconscious, "enclosed" inside the door which epitomize the safety and my origins, but with the hand that leans forward outside to the unknown. The focus point of the work is the hand which is sculpted in the wood with bass-relief technique. So it turns out to be gently prominent compared to the rest of the surface. It symbolize the emergence desire of my unconscious to open the door to the future and to new experiences, in spite of a little bit of fear, without leaving what I consider important to me.
