Your Photograhs Could Be Used By Drug Dealers

Installation, Political / Social, Various materials, 400x350cm
Three mobiles made out of 16 light-boxes showcase 96 photographs in total. Behind the mobiles there is text consisting of fragments of conversations I had with people while photographing in Mexico. One of these conversations serves as the title for the piece, as ‘your photographs could be used by drug dealers’ was what a soldier told me when I asked for permission to take his portrait.
The installation presents a changing landscape, a layered understanding of life in contemporary Mexico. It asks viewers to piece together their own narrative. The narrative within the installation changes, depending on where the viewer chooses to stand.
This body of work tests the charged image of a place, in this case Mexico, provided by mainstream media and popular culture. It also presents a reflection of the non-linear way we experience story telling today via the Internet. This installation is my version of a cloud of images, a series of fragments pieced together while existing in a fluid and interchangeable state. An ocean of moments through which a place and its people can be read.
