A piano in the wood
This is only another story that for years I haven’t managed to tell properly, but
nonetheless: Like in all legends, a woman who got lost in the forest, and wandered
around and could not find her way back, finally realized that she had been walking
.in circles for hours and started to mark the trunks of trees with lipstick. But in vain
Toward nightfall she discovered that deep in the forest stood a piano whose legs were
.only slightly decayed. She thought: Someone went to a great effort to bring this here
To what end? Maybe I can use it to chase the wolves away. She cleaned off the leaves
and branches and opened the lid and struck it with her fist and then rested her hand on
the keys and waited for the darkness. She promised herself that if she found the way
back, she would take piano lessons, and after a few months, when she knew how to
play one composition, she would return to the forest, and search for this piano, maybe
,for most of her life, and finally, perhaps thanks to the signs she left on the tree trunks
she would find it and clean off the leaves and branches and open the lid… The Zen
version of the legend is much shorter. And it has no piano in it.
