Eyeliner

In the video Eyeliner, a woman draws – or, more accurately, traces – the outlines of her face with a black pen eyeliner. When a line finds the borders of the face, the woman turns her head and begins the process anew.

Usually when drawing, the outline is immaterial and abstract despite its substance. On skin’s three-dimensional surface the nature of the line changes, the imprecision of the drawer’s gaze and motion is exposed. Drawing requires immense concentration, but only occasionally does ’nailing it’ succeed. In these moments a hint of a perfect outline can be seen on the video.
