Alternative Families
“Alternative families” is a photographic exploration of the diverse nuclear family units, beyond the hetero-normative, that exist in South Africa in these times.
“Alternative families” is a reflection of how society in post-apartheid South Africa, with a constitution that is widely regarded as the most progressive in the world, has shifted.
It is a showcase of a contemporary, free and democratic society. It presents a modern view of South Africa that helps deepen the understanding both to South Africans and to the world.
Who is family and what is family are questions of interest to me. I was adopted by a Jewish father and Anglican mother. My mother never converted to Judaism so that makes me a “Christian” by Jewish Law, but I was brought up with my Jewish family and know only Judaism. I am single, child and pet free.
The family identified as being “alternative” gets to decide who is family and should be included in the portrait. The members of the family should live in the same house, under the same roof, at least some of the time.
With the use of studio lighting the desired simple and clean look is achieved. The focus is on clearly being able to identify who the members of the family are.
