The first reference refers to the icon of the Holy Family. The art of the icon is a particular form expression where the sacred mysteries are present in space and time. The dance of the circles represents the union between the family members. So the family is the place where every person and every light can be encouraged and supported.
The second reference came from photography as act of presence. That is a certificate that attests true or false realities. The family unit "has been", but it could’t be anymore. The icon becomes a contact sheet, where images we don’t want to see anymore make us blind (because of pain, angel, melancholy, nostalgia).
So the overproduction of digital images leads us into reality we don’t understand. As it is written, -God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.” (Romans 11,8).
The action of disfiguring faces with a pen, It’s the denial of the reality. Denying faces means denying the family connection. The human sign is the only way out of getting alienated because of the hyper-photographic self-representation.
