Secret
Secret is a live participatory sound installation that continues my on-going enquiry into and around relationships of participation, sound-making and the practice of listening within the Gallery. Secret invites the audience to participate with one another in an engaging, playful and subtly flirtatious 'secret'. Inside the Box are two omni-directional micro-phones set up to create one participatory binaural feed to the two sets of headphones. Creating tensions between object and event, the work created remains a private construction between the two participants and only lasts as long as they engage with the piece.
What the participants hear when interacting with the box is a slightly amplified binaural feed of their hands touching, tapping, feeling and rubbing the box. The sound is the natural sound of the participants’ hands moving on the wood. There is no pre-recorded sound so the listening experience differs depending on the relationship of the participants as they hear themselves perform for one-another; are they friends, in a relationship or complete strangers? Whatever they create remains a secret and only lasts for as long as they interact and perform for one-another. There is no recording made of their interactions.
For first time performers the experience can be slightly tentative or even embarrassing as they hear the sounds of their hands move flirtatiously around the ears of the other performer and vice versa. More seasoned performers often turn the box into a secret communication device or even a musical instrument. However they choose to interact or whatever the relationship between the performers, the sound they both hear is a live binaural feed of the creation their hands make on the wood by touching, tapping, feeling and rubbing the box.
Secret was exhibited alongside Bill Viola at PERIPHERIES 2014 as well as featuring in Aesthetica Magazine [2014/15 issue].
