The artwork has the form of a curio cabinet with the front glass broken. Inside this “cabinet”, there are two photos. One is a negative of myself today, at the age of 62, and the second is a synthesis of two of my photos taken at the age of 6 and 60. The work represents my relationship with death. I do not believe in God, therefore I do not believe in life after death. In my opinion, death is non-existence, emptiness and the decomposition of the body. This process brings new lymph feeding new life. The butterflies, as long as they are inside the curio cabinet, are represented in black and white. The moment they escape through the broken glass these butterflies gain their natural bright colors. The curio cabinet reminds me of my childhood. In my house, my family had an old statue of the Virgin Mary placed inside a large curio cabinet with broken glass at the front. This broken glass looked like a guillotine. The whole picture, the Virgin Mary, the curio cabinet and the broken glass, which resembled a guillotine, was rather disturbing for a young boy.
