This painting is not abstracted from a conceptual motive, it registers a process of exploration.
I systematically apply layers of think and thin acrylic paint on stretched canvas to create resistant surfaces.
There are no expectations when I begin to paint, as I want to be directed by the work. I am always intrigued by unexpected events and turns.
My process involves experimentation with energetic and gestural lines and the controlled flow of drippings to establish and divide space.
I add, subtract, drip, smear, splatter, fling and spray paint using brushes, palette knives, rollers and spray bottles.
There is no statement I want to make, no hidden message. I realise that memories of familiar surroundings, like the streets of my hometown Berlin and its rough, but beautiful surfaces find their way into my work.
I also see influences created by my research around female creative identity and the representation of the female body as well as my interest in abstract expressionism.
I am inspired by the work of Franz Kline who said: ” You don’t paint the way someone, by observing his life, thinks you have to paint, you paint the way you have to, in order to give.”
It is my goal to create work that engages the viewer with my process and my intention to abstract structure.
