BERG

A derelict American counter-espionage listening station deep in Grunewald Forest, in the former West Berlin. A relentlessly panning camera screens the landscape around Teufelsberg, an artificial hill built with the rubble of a city destroyed by World War II. BERG investigates a historical site through an alternate shift between documentary and fictional representation. Sound samples from mainstream Spy Movies overlaps a carefully edited selection of documentary shots, inspired by the most repetitive cinematic cliches to be found in the espionage genre. As the video unfolds and the continuity between visuals and sound breaks down, it becomes clearer that the voiceover belongs to a fictional past whilst the location, NSA Station Teufelsberg is depicted in its current state of abandonment.
