Requiem

Requiem

The land scarce situation which Singapore faces leaves us with little room to permanize, remember, and mourn the passing of buildings as they disappear from our rapidly changing cityscape.

'Requiem' depicts an imaginary graveyard for soon-to-be-gone buildings composed using landscapes and vernacular architecture gathered from Bukit Brown, Tiong Bahru, and Dakota estates.

It encourages the audience to draw parallels between the fleeting and ephemeral characteristics associated with the popular use of multiple photographic exposures and the subtle yet steady disappearance of Singapore’s heritage sites and buildings.

From far, what looks like a doubly exposed photograph is in fact a meticulously overpainted image. The surprised realization brought about by the painted nature of the piece serves to illustrate that heritage efforts within a metropolis are often in vain because constant redevelopment of place results in the erasure of memories associated with that space.
