This painting is inspired by Shoji screens (bamboo & paper room dividers) in Japanese architecture, following a trip to Japan in 2013. Views from the outside and the inside are considered from every angle. Carline's work has an ephemeral quality, occupying a delicate space between reality and memory or illusion. The techniques she uses include hand cut stencils with multilayers of thinly applied oil paint using a variety of implements.
