“Gnosis: self-denial” deals with a distorted form of selflessness. The subject depicted realizes that her desperate need to please the others and constantly win their approval has caused her to betray herself and become someone else. She is now able to see that behind her selfless behavior lies an unresolved fear of not being loved. Her eyes convey a deep, pervading sadness that suggests how painful it is to break out of this self-denying pattern and finally be herself.
