One of Europe's largest and oldest's Glaciers, the Rhone Glacier in Switzerland has retreated over 1km during the last 100 years in response to climate change. Glacial retreats are caused by longer melting seasons and a decline in winter snowfall and have serious economical and ecological consequences. In an attempt to minimise ice-melt and preserve access to the Glacier, every summer Swiss landowners cover the Glacier in several kilometres of thick white blankets creating an artificial skin for this ancient natural wonder. Akin to a placing a sticking plaster to a broken leg this measure of protecting the natural environment can only be considered a temporary one. Unless humans leave behind the idea that we are a separate entity outside of the environment and begin to address the cause of climate change, this artificial stain on the landscape will soon have nothing to protect.
