Re[figuring] Dialectical Flatness: Conjunct_subject / Red & Pink / masculine & its balancing / heart & its echo

Painting, Portrait, Political / Social, Landscape, Human figure, Mixed technique, 61x130x0.3cm
In my work, the figure is both the outline of the physical body and the mould which shapes / contains / restrains a life form, whether that life form constitutes human or animal life. The figure / body form / figured_body_form is host to the physical, emotional, mental and energy bodies. The sum total of these guest bodies = embodiment. The figure / figured_body_form, although it is both an outline and mould, is not an enclosed body parameter / enclave / entombment, but functions as if an osmotic membrane. Thus, the contour  found in my work does not separate, but breathes.

My engagement within Re[figuring] Dialectical Flatness stems from a need to understand myself and the place and space I was born into.

Flatness is not a condition belonging to Modernism alone, nor is it the language of all abstract expressionist lines. Western Philosophy is strongly founded upon the dialectic, but I don’t think the West is alone in birthing and conceiving violence. Whoever the culprit was who threw the first stone at the other side in order to inflict harm, triggered another side throwing a stone in defense. Do we stand defenseless in the face of harm? I don’t know.
