The Evolution of Ideas, Institutions and Understanding
Text is often featured in works. For example Fair Play cites text from the Magna Carta, exploring ideology outlined in the text – ” No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land.” An underlying theme in this work is the idea of democracy being something which has been set up to allow our children a secure and fair future but Legassick see’s in not as a static thing but an ever changing and fluid idea that adapts and learns to better suit the society it is there for.
Wealth of Nations – another piece in this series – features text from Adam Smith’s book The Wealth of Nations. Adam Smith was a Scottish moral philosopher and a pioneer of political economy. He is cited as the “father of modern economics” and is still among the most influential thinkers in the field of economics today. The text is overlaid in the background of the piece in a font akin to the original texts. The indistinguishable effect of the people in the image represent the faceless / nameless hordes that contribute to the building of a nation’s wealth.
Evolution: The Thread that Sews Time features text from Charles Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species” and is a personal tribute to the idea of evolution.
Each image composition is driven by the idea behind it, resulting in an interesting yet visually diverse set of artworks. This is an ongoing project with a theme that presents Legassick with a plethora of different ideas to explore.
