What divides us, what unites us

What divides us, what unites us

Installation, Political / Social, Freedom, Family, Various materials, 400x20x2cm
Traveling, exploring, having a sense of moving forward and learning, this is the basis of life and they are universal desires that unite us. But what predominates now is a world with fortified borders which is divided by people who can and those that cannot travel freely. This has become very apparent to me when traveling from my hometown Amsterdam to London where my son lives. It awoke in me a sense of how this bigger context is touching upon my personal life. The images, however innocent, I came across get a different meaning and lead to a bigger story: a parallel world with a political undercurrent. I wanted to capture this concept and the 14 images are open-ended snapshots and observations from this specific journey from Amsterdam to London with the ferry from Calais on March 4, 2016.
