Queer Animal
Motto: „And yet the rainbows exist. It is not just our imagination. And maybe the rainbow waves also exist? Wouldn’t it be worth to form an alliance with them?”
The description of project:
This project shows a compilation of two animals: canis vertigus and Schrödinger’s Cat and, in a symbolic manner, it relieves them.
Canis vertigus is a now extinct type of a dog, which used to be treated as a kitchen equipment. Raised in England back in the 16th century, the Turnspit Dog (the English name of this breed) was a short-legged, long-bodied dog bred to run long distances on a wheel in order to turn meat. The wheel (known as turnspit or dog wheel) was hung on the wall and connected with a chain to a rolling barbeque. Thanks to canis vertigus, the meat was perfectly grilled.
On Sundays the dogs were released from their kitchen duties and were taken to churches where they served as foot warmers. When in 19th century cheap barbeque machines replaced turnspit dogs, they became useless. As being poorly attractive their function as pet dogs was hardly required. Consequently, they became extinct with the beginnings of 20th century.
The Schrödinger’s Cat is a thought experiment – a hypothetical animal simultaneously dead and alive while being trapped in a box. Erwin Schrödinger suggested a following experiment: a living cat, a flask of poison, and a radioactive source (with the possibility of ionizing radiation) are placed in a sealed box. If an internal monitor detects radioactivity (i.e., a single atom decaying), the flask is shattered, releasing the poison that kills the cat. However, if no radioactivity is detected then cat is still alive. Therefore, we gain the 50-50 percent chance of cat’s survival.
Schrödinger’s cat has become the finest example of twisted thoughts experiments in quantum mechanics that explains different quantum states of atoms. Theoretically, atoms can be in various places at the very same time. Initally, this theory was viewed as ridiculous and it was considered impossible to obtain such a state in a laboratory. However, in 1980s two scientific teams working independently trapped a singular photons and atoms, without damaging their quantum states. This experiment was awarded with a Nobel Prize in 2012. The theory has become the reality.
But how should quantum wave functions be presented in order to receive the nearest image of how it is coded by nature? Scientists suggested the rainbow waves...
This piece of work is a reflection upon contemporary weirdo condition. How is weirdness perceived today? Different – does it mean worse, rejected, strange and... queer? Or perhaps, on the contrary – it is powerful, unique and original? Though queer term is often viewed as negative, it also refers to LGBTQ community. At the beginnings of 1990s a queer theory was formed as a part of culture or rather gender studies. It describes people as unique individuals differing one from another in biological, psychological and social aspects.
