Non ero neppure della stessa natura dell'uomo

Non ero neppure della stessa natura dell'uomo

"Was man, indeed, at once so powerful, so virtuous and magnificent, yet so vicious and base? [...] For a long time I could not conceive how one man could go forth to murder his fellow, or even why there were laws and governments; but when I heard details of vice and bloodshed, my wonder ceased, and I turned away with disgust and loathing.
[...] The strange system of human society was explained to me [...] And what was I? [...] I was, besides, endued with a figure hideously deformed and loathsome; I was not even of the same nature as men. (Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, vol II, cap. V)

“A spectre is haunting humanity - the spectre of fear. Death stares unblinkingly at us. Danger appears in everyday environs. Sometimes a scary person or a menacing object can be identified: the flames searing patterns on the ceiling, the hydrogen bomb, the terrorist..” Perhaps for that short distance and the proximity felt, the attacks in Paris and later in Brussels certainly roused a deep echo and left a trail even more pronounced in our society.
A new architecture of the fear - of the terrorism - latently began to change our behavior. A more armored public life and an unclear fear of the other, of difference from us. If only for religious beliefs. And the terror of the invisible and unpredictable, of something inserting thinly to create a chain reaction, a reaction that spreads like wildfire.
It grows and spreads, just like rust. It corrodes.
Fear now came within us and we do not even notice, meanwhile, undefined dangers - like a confused hank - threaten to paralyze and prevent us from living. In the meantime, our freedom is living, injured, of alarmed suspicion, of limits , barriers or similar, of old walls as much as our history and culture.

The images were taken in Rome after Paris and Brussels attacks.
